I was honored to be asked to testify this morning in Lansing, via Zoom, in support of HB 5797, which could provide some much-needed flexibility for the unusually large number of makeup days schools have faced this year due to the harsh winter weather.
I was invited to give a statement alongside one superintendent from the U.P. and the superintendent from Alpena. Following testimony, the House Government Operations Committee voted unanimously to advance HB 5797 by a 5–0 vote.
Later today, we were informed that the bill also passed the full House of Representatives by a 99–5 vote. The bill is now headed to the Senate. Conversations there have been positive, although the outcome remains inconclusive for now.
All NMSLA legislators were critical to the bill’s passage through the House. A special thank you to Reps. Cam Cavitt and Parker Fairbairn for their leadership and support throughout this process.
We will continue to keep everyone updated, and you can also follow the progress of HB 5797 online.
