Cheboygan Area Schools Board of Education Approves Disclaimer Resolution

On March 2, 2026, the Cheboygan Area Schools Board of Education held a Special Board Meeting to address concerns regarding recent social media statements and conduct by a trustee.

Following discussion and consultation with legal counsel, the Board unanimously approved a Disclaimer Resolution by a 6–0 vote. This action formally clarifies that the recent statements and behaviors of the trustee do not represent the collective voice of the Board of Education or the district and do not align with Board policies and operating procedures.

Under Michigan law, a local board of education does not have the authority to remove an elected or appointed trustee from office. That authority rests solely with the Governor through a formal removal process or with voters through recall. A censure resolution would not alter those legal limitations.

In addition to the adoption of the Disclaimer Resolution, further actions were taken in accordance with existing Board policy. These actions include:

  • Removal of the trustee from all Board committee assignments

  • Revocation of district-issued key card access

  • Removal from volunteer coaching responsibilities

  • Removal from supervision of the weight room

  • Restriction of access to students for promoting personal opinions

These actions were taken collaboratively and in alignment with Board policy governing committee assignments and facility access. The resolution itself did not create new authority but accompanied actions already permitted under district policy.

Board President Julie Lohela stated:

“On March 2, 2026, the Board of Education unanimously approved a Disclaimer Resolution. This action reaffirmed the Board’s collective voice and clarified that recent statements and behaviors by a trustee did not represent the Board or the district and did not comply with the policies and operating procedures that govern all trustees.

A censure resolution would not have changed the legal limits we operate under. Whether the Board adopts a Disclaimer Resolution or a Censure Resolution, Michigan law still prohibits a school board from removing an elected or appointed trustee from office. Only the voters, through recall, or the Governor, through a formal removal process, have that authority.”

The Board remains committed to maintaining professionalism, ethical conduct, transparency, and a safe and respectful educational environment for students, staff, and the community.
