Governor Whitmer Visits Cheboygan County and Emergency Update

Dear Community Members,

This morning, Governor Whitmer visited the County Emergency Operations Center (as shown in the picture) to assess the ongoing recovery efforts in the wake of the ice storm. On Monday, she declared a state of emergency for 12 counties in Northern Michigan, including Cheboygan. As part of the response, Governor Whitmer has deployed the Michigan National Guard to provide additional personnel and specialized equipment to support recovery operations.

“My top priority right now is ensuring that all first responders have the fuel they need to continue their efforts and that Michigan families have the energy necessary to heat their homes during this cold weather,” said Governor Whitmer. Executive Order 2025-5, which took effect Thursday, April 3rd, remains in effect through Thursday, April 10th. Due to the ongoing recovery efforts, Cheboygan Area Schools will remain closed through Wednesday. The district administration will meet with the county Emergency Services Team early next week and will provide additional updates regarding plans for the school’s reopening.

Once again, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the linemen and first responders working tirelessly, often 16-hour days, to restore power and ensure safety for all.

Thank you for your continued patience and support.

Sincerely,
Spencer S. Byrd, Ed.S - Superintendent
