CONFRONTING SOCIAL MEDIA PUNDITS
We write to you, the citizens of Cheboygan County, especially the concerned parents of school aged children.  It has been brought to our attention there is a certain segment of those among us that feel the need to post “Misinformation” on social media.  This is unfortunate on many levels but the most damaging is to continue to instill fear among the community.
We would like to take this time to address these issues.  First we, the law enforcement community work closely with the school systems in Cheboygan County.  We, as well as the school administrators, want nothing more than our children to have a safe environment to learn and grow. When there is an issue that involves law enforcement we take it very seriously and do everything in our power to resolve it in a timely manner.
Over the week we had three threats of violence directed towards the school and the students.  The first was Thursday December 2nd.  This resulted in a joint investigation between law enforcement and a local 15 year old juvenile.  He was arrested and charged and is currently in the court system.  The second was on December 7th followed by a third December 8th.  This again was investigated by law enforcement.  The investigation quickly led to a suspect in North-West Canada responsible for both.  Working with our Canadian law enforcement partners, they were able to make an arrest.  We are currently working with our Canadian law enforcement partners and their government to determine how to best proceed.
We caution the public, especially the parents, when it comes to “Believing” what is on a social media platform.  These social media pundits opine without factual foundations.  We assure you we will do everything in our power to protect our children and hold accountable, to the greatest extent of the law, those that threaten or harm them.
